I first met Mike at a poker table in Vancouver Wa. He was always very disciplined and seemed to have a mental capacity beyond the usual players. We would occasionally share a beer or 2..? We became friends and as a young realtor I sold him a condo near the Van Mall. We subsequently made a few trips to Vegas and played in some tournaments; he was always so very entertaining ; he had some great stories and a fantastic memory. He will be missed. Rich Manning

The "Big Bopper" stood way out...and maybe above. I still remember the first day I met him on June 10th, 1957 outside the Riverdale Grade School gym door.
Through the years he was so colorful. He rejected any form of work and the social contract. He rejected the Vietnam War. He was put in a state mental hospital for 5 weeks and he still refused to go.
He was an extraordinary athlete. He scissored 5'3" at the Riverdale Grade School field day in the 8th grade which may still be a school record to this day. At least he thought so. He was arguably the fastest sprinter at Lincoln High School (maybe Rick White but we will never know) for many years. He finished second in the 100 yard dash at the Portland High School City Championship his senior year. That was without ever training! Long distances were too much work and pain for him to be interested in.
Mike was a professional card player in Vancouver and La Center for 40 years. He kept his money in his sock...no bank account. He was kind of a legend and he was known as "too tight Mike".
What really set him apart was his style of dress, his love of music and the theater. His degree at the U of O was in theater and all through life he would engage in theatrics that would startle and amaze people. He had a very sharp tongue and he obsessed about injustice and human folly. He never forgot any transgression no matter how small. His favorite expression was "you know what I mean?"
He was erudite and knew a great deal about philosophy, baseball, boxing, and most importantly, blues music. He was friends with Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf and sometimes he would call them in the middle of the night. They sometimes would answer!
Mike could not accept racism or unfair policies causing disparity of wealth and opportunity.
He was so unable to accept conventional society that he developed an extreme tendency to drink. When he drank watch out...he could stir up some amazing outcomes.
He said "you can make a lion jump through hoops but he is still a lion". He could quote Shakespeare at length.
He was loved and known by many many people. There was for many years and still is an annual golf tournament named after him called "The Mike March Open". It celebrates his truly amazing and unique spirit. It was simply the way he lived his life that will be remembered.
Mike is survived by his sister Tammy and her kids and his wife Rose and her family in Louisiana. Enough can not be said about the care they gave to Mike during the very sad and difficult last three months of his life. In my mind Rose is a saint.
I will never forget Mike. I miss him terribly, aggravation and all.
May he rest in peace.

Mike was one of my best buddies. I always enjoyed hanging out and visiting with Mike. He always had an anecdote for any occasion. He was a an experienced man, and I always appreciated his fatherly advice. You will be remembered with admiration Mike. I would like to extend my condolences to Mike's family, Rose and his other friends.

During the summer days when I was stuck outside, I would always poke my head over the gate and say hi. He would always have crazy story's with morals to them and shared them with me. I'm glad I got to Be a person who listened to his one of a kind life.

Mike was the best neighbor a single mama veteran could have asked for, he looked out for us and treated the kids like they were his own grandchildren. Mike, was more then a neighbor he was family. We miss him, and will be eternal greatful for Mike and Mrs. Rose, and the joy of having them next door for all these years.

My Uncle Mike
Truly one of a kind. I have never known anyone quite like him. He had so many stories that could only have happened to him. You could make me fall over laughing and also shake with anger. I never knew which one it was going to be. My uncle lived life his way all the way. I always respected and admired that about him. Thanks for all of the memories.

The end of this life is the passage into the next. Your journey here was filled with adventure. So many memories of your travels, extensive knowledge of music and baseball. There was always a interesting conversation to be had with you. Thank you for showing my mom a beautiful life. You made her very happy and that made me very happy. You will be missed dearly.
With all my love,
“The Kid”

My memories of you go back to my beginnings. You were my protector, my hero and my biggest head ache and worry. You were always a classic “one of a kind.” that could be a source of great pride and equally great embarrassment. You brought wonderful Rose and her fabulous family into our small clan. That continues to be a blessing. I’ll miss you, brother. With love, Tammy
