James was a wonderfully open man, interested in so many things: Fishing, nature, flying, history, people...etc. Always full of energy and so positive. I am distantly related to him.We have the same 3rd great grandfather Christian Voelzer who emigrated from the small village Garwitz in Mecklenburg/Germany to the USA in April 1871. He followed his son Wilhelm who had already immigrated in 1868 with the ship "Borussia" via Hamburg, New York to Chariton, Missouri. Jim sent me many photos, letters, anecdotes and newspaper clippings of his family and ancestors. My children wear caps from the Wildlife Service he worked for. Jim we will miss you and never forget you. Magaly and Joanne, I offer my deepest condolences to you and your families.

For two years, I flew with Jim as his observer on the May and July waterfowl surveys in the western Dakotas and Montana. It was the best duty I ever had. Congenial and competent, Jim was a pleasure to work with. And that voice – one that many media personalities would have envied, I can still hear it in my head, Jim, measured and calm, calling into those small town airports, “Malta traffic, November-seven-zero-five, left, downwind, for runway one.”
Downtime with Jim was always relaxing and fun, especially at drinks and dinners. For laughs and perspective, we started the survey at Pierre, SD with the traditional ½ inch thin, leather tough, t-bone steak dinner at the greasy D&E café. Then, as the survey progressed, we upscaled to good, hearty, steak dinners at other restaurants. Jim liked steak. Midway in the survey we would fly out of Lewistown, MT, where coincidentally it would be time for a 100-hour inspection on the plane, meaning we’d have a day off for fishing in Big Spring Creek. We caught a lot of trout. We gave most away, but always reserved a couple for ourselves to be specially prepared for us by the chef at our favorite restaurant. Fun it was, but also with Jim, the work got done, and done right. I always came home proud to work with colleagues like Jim in the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Now I imagine Jim making one last call-in: “Sky traffic, Jim Voelzer, climbing upwind, for runway one in the Eternal Sky!” R.I.P., buddy Jim. You were the best.

Jim was my best friend in High School, thru college at Utah State majoring in wildlife Management and subsequently both working for the US Fish & Wildlife Service, he as a pilot biologist and I as a special agent. After retiring we had some memorable deer hunts together for many years in Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska. He was a life long friend and I will miss him very much. Rest in peace my friend..

At BHS Jim was liked by all and had a wonderful life - except VNam. His job was one of the most dangerous drawing fire as a low level spotter pilot. Join in honoring their life - plant a memorial tree
