Rex Sidney Stout

A loving husband, father, friend, and community member, Rex passed away from complications of lung cancer on January 19, 2019. Rex succumbed to his condition surrounded by loving family, friends, and a caring staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland, OR at the age of 66.

Rex was born to Raymond Augustine Stout and Georgia Colston Stout on May 20, 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee.  Hapeville, Georgia was where he was raised with his brother and sister Michael (Butch) and Nancy Ray Floyd.  While growing up, Rex enjoyed Scouting in which he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Upon graduating from Hapeville High School and after a brief attendance at Young Harris College Rex enlisted into the United States Army.  After completing Basic Combat Training, he served as a Signal Security Specialist.  While in the US Army Rex was station at Ft. Benning, GA; Okanawa, Japan; and Ft. Lewis, WA; and Ft Bragg, NC.  It was while he was posted to Ft Lewis that he would meet the love of his life and future bride Debra Lynn Kronberg of Portland, Oregon.  After almost seven years of faithful service (two and a half years were overseas) Rex was honorably discharged.

Upon separating from the service he went to work for Portland General Electric (PGE) in Portland, OR.  Over his 36 years of working for Rex worked at Storeroom 62, in Portland, OR; Trojan Nuclear Plant, Rainier, OR; Beaver Generation Plant, Clatskanie, OR. It was while he was working at Beaver that he earned his Journeyman Card as a High Voltage Electrician/Wireman. Over his next 20 years as a Journeyman, Rex worked all over Oregon helping to build and maintain the state’s electrical infrastructure.  He retired in May 2014.

In his retired years Rex enjoyed passing the time gardening and raising chickens/turkeys on his hobby farm in Rainier, OR. He also greatly enjoyed reading, watching old western movies, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.  In maybe his last claim to fame (at least in the local Rainier area)  he raised his 175 lbs. Great Dane dog officially named Hoss, but Rex referred to him as “Cupcake”( you’ll have to ask Deb the story behind that! ).

More than all of his other accomplishments, Rex was most proud of being a loving and committed husband, father, and provider for his family. He referred to his sons, Michael and Drew as his “Pride and Joy”. Survived by: married to wife, Debra L. Stout(Sept would have been 40 years), sons(his best friends); Michael M. Stout of Springfield, OR married to Jillian Bo Stout .& Drew C. Stout married to Pamela Sue Stout,  of Rainier, Ore.  Grandchildren, Skylor Grace Stout, Tristin S. Stout, Kiernan A.
