Obituary of Dorathy M. Salvadalena
Dorathy Marie Salvadalena
October 8, 1920 – November 29, 2018
Dorathy M. Salvadalena passed away peacefully at her home in Vancouver, WA on November 29, 2018.
Born October 8, 1920 in Monroe, Washington to Albert H. Steffen and Alma (Bischofberger) Steffen, she grew up on a dairy farm on the banks of the Skykomish River. She had one sibling, Donald A. Steffen, who was three years younger. Dorathy attended Monroe schools and graduated from Monroe High School in 1938.
After high school, Dorathy worked several years in Seattle at The Grange Insurance office.
On November 19, 1943 Dorathy married her high school sweetheart, Henry A. Salvadalena, who had recently returned from Alaska where he served in the US Coast Guard. Dorathy and Henry were married for nearly 66 years, until Henry’s death in October 2009.
In 1954, Dorathy and Henry moved their young family from Monroe to a unit of land about 18 miles north of Pasco, Washington. Together, they developed the arid acreage into a dairy farm that grew most of the necessary forage for their cattle, with the introduction of irrigation water supplied by the Grand Coulee Dam.
Dorathy and Henry were active in the Grange and the Holstein-Friesen Association. They were also active supporters of FFA, 4-H, local sports and their grandchildren. Dorathy was well-known as an astute player of games – especially cribbage and pinochle. In her nineties, she played “Words With Friends” and other competitive on-line games with her children and grandchildren.
After all four of their children graduated from Washington State University, Dorathy and Henry moved back to Monroe, Washington, in 1978. In 1994, they moved to Vancouver, Washington where they remained until their deaths.
Dorathy was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother. She is survived by children: Janet M. Hove (Rhio), Douglas A. Salvadalena (Janie), Loretta R. Allred (Douglas), and Russell H. Salvadalena (Janie); 21 grandchildren and 22.5 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Touchmark Senior Living Center in Vancouver, Washington, on Friday, December 7. Family visit at noon, and the service begins at 2:00 PM.
