Obituary of Lloyd H DeWerff
Lloyd H. DeWerff
July 5, 1939 - October 4, 2018. Lloyd Herman DeWerff, 79, of Vancouver, Washington passed away from ALS on October 4, 2018 at Elaine and Don Heimbigner Hospice Care Center.
Lloyd was born in Great Bend, Kansas to Doris and Harvey DeWerff.
Lloyd grew up and attended school in Ellinwood, Kansas. He then received his degree in landscape architecture from Kansas State University, where he was a member of Beta Sigma Psi Fraternity. He met his future wife, Betty Jean, as a freshman. They dated throughout college and married two weeks after they graduated.
Lloyd was a landscape architect for the U.S. Forest Service for 30 years. His proudest projects included designing recreation and ski areas in the 1960’s in Colorado, working on the permit system for the Rogue River, having the Illinois River designated as a Wild and Scenic River, and long range planning for the Ochoco and Gifford Pinchot National Forests.
After Lloyd retired, he enjoyed wood working, wood turning, golfing, gardening, marshaling at Tri Mountain Golf Course, and spending time with family and friends. He has been an active church member his entire life, building many strong friendships, and and an even stronger faith. Lloyd will be missed most for his firm faith, quick wit, strong ethics, and wicked sense of humor.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty; daughters Kim Stout, (Ron), and Kristi Hedrick, (Bryan), both of Portland, Oregon, and grandchildren Emily Stout and Aaron Stout. He is also survived by brother Duane DeWerff of Albuquerque, New Mexico; twin brother Glen DeWerff (Mary) of Kansas City, Kansas; sister Linda Lebbin (Keith), of Scott City, Kansas; brother-in-law Donald Stucker of Lancaster, Kansas; and sister-in-law Norma Hodges (Dale) of Emporia, Kansas; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-laws Leila Stucker and Charmaine DeWerff.
A service will be held on Saturday, October 13, at 2:00 pm at Vancouver Church, 3300 NE 78th Street, Vancouver, Washington 98665. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that remembrances be made to the ALS Association of Oregon and Southwest Washington, 700 NE Multnomah Street, Suite 210, Portland, Oregon 97232 or Vancouver Church.
