Shelby E. Plummer

1981 - 2018

Shelby died peacefully in her sleep at age 37 in her home in Vancouver, Washington.  Shortly after graduating from Mountain View High School (with a short stint at Round Table Pizza), she joined the Army and attended Boot Camp in South Carolina where she earned the title of “sharpshooter” during her training.  She excelled in the “box” in Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and then was deployed to South Korea.  During her service, Shelby received the Army Achievement Medal for Meritorious Service as Quartermaster after which she was assigned to Ft. Polk, Louisiana.  Shelby honed her skills as a culinary artist while serving in Louisiana - she could cook up the best crawfish étoufée imaginable.

After her honorable discharge, Shelby came back to Vancouver and reunited with family, living a quiet life with her animals and crafting projects.  She loved hiking, camping and traveling with her mom and friends.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Joan Murray of Vancouver, Washington; her sister, Crystal Murray of Vancouver, Washington; her brother, Joseph Benchek of Elk River, Minnesota; two nephews, Stryker and Jack; and two half-sisters, Sheila Cruz of Vancouver, Washington; and Jen Hanson of Toelle, Utah.

Services will be held on May 17, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt Scott Boulevard, Happy Valley, OR 97086.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Southwest Washington Humane Society, 1100 NE 192nd Avenue, Vancouver, Washington 98684.
