Hello Family & Friends. My name is Gary Moore and I live in Prescott Valley, AZ.
I first met Scott around 1974 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was attending DeVry Institute of Technology studying to get his Electronics Tech. Certification utilizing the G.I. Bill.
We first met around the pool at the apartment complex where we were living. He was sharing an apartment with a fellow student and I was employed as a CATV Systems Design Engineer and living alone. Having a background in the Navy as a Communication Electrician, and us both being ex-Navy swabbies and into electronics and music, we had a lot of stories and favorite tunes to share.
Not too long after meeting Scott, his roommate flunked out of school and could no longer hold up his part of the apartment expense. Scott was desperate. He only had his income from the GI Bill and was panicking. So soon after this revelation, Scott approached me about sharing an apartment. Having become pretty good buds, I agreed immediately. I was happy to relieve him of this great stress and soon we were sharing a drink together at our favorite water hole, a place called Minder Binders in Tempe, Arizona.
If you have never heard of this place, please Google it and you will find it to have been a pretty unique gathering for all ages, and a venue frequented by ladies from (Arizona State University)! Scott was on a strict budget, so he carried around an almost empty beer bottle for most of the night and so he was usually the designated driver.
We were roommates for a couple of years enjoying each other’s company along with the company of a couple of steady girlfriends. Well as happens in life, our lives moved on. Scott graduated from DeVry and was able to land good jobs with local electronic companies back in Silicon Valley where he grew up.
Over the years we kept in touch and would each travel to one another’s area. I had continued my occupation in the CATV industry moving to Van Nuys, CA in 1976 and then eventually working for a CATV System Operator in the San Luis Obispo CA area in 1978. This brought us closer together and visits were easier until Scott traveled up to Oregon in mid-1979 to do some work for his dad in the Dalles.
It was about a year later that Scott met Judy and they fell in love. Scott called me and I knew talking to him that he was smitten. I was so happy that he was finally able to find a soulmate after being single for so long. I was honored to stand-up for him and Judy when they got married in 1983 in Lake Tahoe.
As careers have a tendency to do, I wasn’t able to visit Scott again until April 1989. I had moved to Las Vegas in February of 1989 and I knew Scott’s 40th birthday was coming up. I can’t remember if it was Judy or me who called to set up a surprise Birthday visit. What fun to see the look on his face when I showed up at their house. SURPRISE!! Gotcha Scott!
In 1990, my wife Dee and I got married while living in Las Vegas and in April 1993 our first son was born. We named him Jared SCOTT Moore. His middle name was in honor of my best friend. A couple months later we traveled to visit Scott & Judy and brought Scott’s namesake, Jared, along for a wonderful visit.
I have been blessed that Scott and I were able to maintain our friendship via phone calls and the occasional visits over the years. I was able to visit Scott in the Portland VA hospital at the end of April and was so glad I made the trip. I prayed that he would beat this as he had overcome previous health issues. Sadly, that was not the case. And so now with a heavy heart I must say goodbye to my very, very dear friend. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends for your loss of this great patriot and gentleman. I know he will be missed. Rest in Peace brother and I’m sure I’ll see you again on the other side.
