Chuck was a Giant among those who admire the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and Private Property Rights. His expertise was organizing victims of government tyranny and making it fun in the process ! I was. Chuck’s in house geoscientist for almost 30 years, Chuck was my best friend and like a brother. He made it fun to take on out of control government agencies. When opposing the “ fake news” California Desert Protection Act, He drafted a bumper sticker “IF YOU LIKE THE POST OFFiCE-YOU WILL LOVE THE PARK SERVICE! Desert USPO mail trucks carried these on their bumpers

Thank you Chuck for helping our rural community survive 7 bills in Congress to federalize our area in the 1980s. By now we would all be gone had any of those bills passed, and a community no more. Despite those rejections by Congress, the Forest Service and others are now buying us out, one land deal at a time. The attack on rural America continues, but some of us push back, inspired by those who came before us, including you. Rest In Peace.

I met Chuck nearly 50 years ago when he was dating my sister. A good friend who had a lot of the same interests as me in common. I spent the past 47 years as a Forester in California. Lots of communication with Chuck either on the phone or by email. My wife and I visited Chuck at his home in Battle Ground Washington about 6 years ago. We got to tie up a lot of loose ends. He will be missed.

Here it is May and I am once again thinking about Chuck. George and I were friends with Chuck from the Reagan years. He was one to be "in the foxhole with" when fighting to protects our liberty, property and sacred honor. We still often talk of him when reliving old battles or considering strategies for new ones. May the many memories we all have of Chuck, a good man, be a clarion call when the next need for a hero comes along.

We here in Northeast MT are so sorry for your loss. I just heard & am so sad. I never had the pleasure of meeting Chuck in person but spent a lot of time with him on the phone. He inspired & led us to stop a National monument from encompassing our whole area. He became a good friend along the way, telling me it was never too late to call him. His wisdom was invaluable & he was proud to be referred to as "rent a riot" which makes me smile to think of him telling me that. It's hard to believe we don't have him here any more to lead the next charge. When I was feeling pretty hopeless at one point along the way, Chuck told me to remember that "the worst day here is better than the best day in any other country" which is so so true & I think of him often remembering those words & today it is with a tear coming down my cheek. You have led many a rally, charged ahead full blast for the last time, now may you rest in peace my friend. Our prayers are with you all!

Chuck always wore the white hat. His methods were good clean fun. He was on the side of individuals whose lives and property were being destroyed and stolen by big government, and he always did it with energy, creativity and good humor. He spoke the truth and exposed bad behavior. He gave his life to help others, a real hero in my book.

Chuck and I came together in the US Senate when it all began. We became a team and I represented him and the National Inholders Association for some time in Wash DC until I went home to Alaska. With my appointment by Pres Reagan to oversee the NPS etc we agreed that we would keep our connection quiet. We did, but I can assure you there were significant changes not only in the NPS but all federal land management organizations - all directly a reflection of the work Chuck and I started in 1978-9. Alaska has lost a great friend and human rights warrior. He could be a real pain in the butt at times, but we really rarely disagreed about the goals, it was the strategies we argued about. I will miss Chuck and look forward to his book from another friend. If you don't know my book is still on Amazon and now rated 5 stars. If you get one, I'll trade for a autographed copy. Chuck led a very significant life that his extended family and descendants will cherish learning about in Ron’s upcoming biography. A giant of a man, Chuck was a warrior until he could no longer physically fight the battles. Many people throughout the country will mourn his passing.

Chuck Cushman gave hope to thousands of rural Americans whose faith in fair treatment by their government was shattered by seemingly unstopable federal agency property rights abuses. Chuck inspired by teaching citizens that they can fight back, block overreach and force government to act more responsibly. Chuck, the son of a Yosemite park ranger, made sure we knew that the BLM, NPS, Forest Service, FWS and other fed agencies have many good public servants trying to do the right thing but crippled by the bad behavior and other agendas of too many fed employees and managers.

We in Madison, Virginia met Chuck in 1991 during a battle to keep private land in private hands instead of Shenandoah National Park. We followed his relentless work as he continued to be an inspiration to free people everywhere. There can be no doubt that his place in Heaven is unregulated and secure.

Chuck, I don't know where to start. You did so much for so many people. You and Mahatma Gandhi were (very!) different, but had the same system: First the powers that be would try to ignore you, but that definitely wasn't going to work. Then they would laugh at you, but that didn't work either. Then they tried to fight you. Then you would win. You will be remembered for a very long time by many many people.
