Alexander Barges "Alex" age 84 of Vancouver, Washington, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House.  He was born on July 5, 1932 in New York, New York, residing in Vancouver since 1998.  Alex is survived by his wife Jacqueline "Jackie", his daughter Christine, his son Demetri and two grandchildren Justin and Brooke.

 
The son of James and Marianthe Barges, Alex's family moved to California in 1946 where Alex attended Venice High School. He graduated in 1950 and served his country in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1953.  He served on a US Navy Destroyer and was a Korean War Veteran.

Alex was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of California, Berkeley, 1956. He then attended Northwestern University where he received his MBA and PhD, 1961. Alex began his teaching career in 1962 as an Assistant Professor at the University Of Southern California, Marshall School Of Business.  He met Jackie in Santa Monica, California and they married in New York City in 1966.  Alex and Jackie resided in Amherst, Massachusetts, where Alex was a Professor of Business, Finance at the University of Massachusetts, Isenberg School of Management until he retired in 1995.  Alex was a distinguished professor and well-respected by his peers and students, receiving numerous teaching awards over the years. 

Alex invested his life in teaching others.  He was an avid reader and researcher and had a passion for discovering emerging companies and technologies and investing in their potential. 

Alex enjoyed retirement in Vancouver Washington visiting sites along the Columbia River with family and friends, including the Kaiser Shipyards and the Bonneville Dam.   His hobbies included boating, World War II history, watching film classics and collecting coins, artwork and hand-crafted wooden sculptures.  

The family wishes to thank the caregivers of Ray Hickey Hospice House for the very loving care Alex received in his final days.

A private gathering of family and friends will honor his life.  His memory will live in our hearts.
